Talk Like Goku! A Guide to His Unique Japanese
1.「おっす!」 (Ossu!)
A very casual and masculine greeting.
Commonly used among martial artists or young men.
Similar in tone to “Hey!” or “Yo!” in English.
2.「オラ」 (Ora)
A rustic or regional (especially Tōhoku dialect) way of saying “I” (first-person pronoun).
Used by Goku to give him a humble, country-boy personality that feels natural and friendly.
It adds charm and uniqueness to his speech.
3.「すっぞ〜」 (Suzzo~)
A casual contraction of 「するぞ〜」 meaning “I’m gonna do it!” or “Let’s do it!”
Emphasizes action in a playful, informal way.
Reflects Goku’s energetic and relaxed nature.
4.「おめぇ」 (Omee)
A rough or colloquial form of 「おまえ」, meaning “you.”
Common in anime/manga among close friends or in rural speech.
Sounds more rugged or friendly depending on context—Goku uses it casually.
5.「すっと」 (Sutto)
A casual form of 「すると」 meaning “if you do [it]” or “when you do [it].”
In Goku’s rural speech, it becomes shortened and relaxed.
e.g., “CC字幕をオンにすっと…” = “If you turn on the CC subtitles…”
6.「いっちょ」 (Iccho)
A slangy way of saying 「一丁」 (“one shot” or “one go”).
Common in the phrase「いっちょやってみっか!」 (“Let’s give it a try!”)
Goku’s phrase「いっちょ始めっぞ!」has an upbeat, can-do feeling.
7.「めっちゃ」 (Meccha)
A Kansai dialect word meaning “very” or “super.”
Widely used throughout Japan in casual speech.
In “オラめっちゃうれしいぞ!” it means “I’m super happy!”
8.「ばいちゃ」 (Baicha)
A cute or playful way of saying “Bye-bye!”
It’s a combination of “Bye” and “Cha” (a cute-sounding suffix).
Although it’s not often used in Dragon Ball, “baicha” has become one of Akira Toriyama’s signature phrases, especially known from Dr. Slump.
