The moment this movie absolutely HAD me was the first time Jake pilots his avatar, where he blows off the scientists trying to get him to take it slow and bursts out the door just to run again. it defines his entire point of view so elegantly without dialogue or explanation. There are a lot of moments like this that I think people forget and overlook. These characters are definitely not as boring or one note as people say
The only thing I want in a series out of Avatar, is its own version of "Planet Earth", narrated by Sigourney Weaver. I want to obsess and learn ALL the things about Pandora and its tribes and flora and fauna. So much thought was put into it, so much detail, I want to eat up ALL. OF. IT.
One sentence that always sticks with me from their love story is "I see you", it sums up love to me perfectly, they're able to recognize each other's hearts and they fall in love with that.
That ending monologue alone deserves an Oscar nomination.
Neytiri fell in love with jake because his character is loveable (to her at least). His attitude to learning is attractive, his open mindedness, he is humble, brave, and of course the physical attraction. Their love for each other is not shallow. Both of their qualities are on display for each other throughout the film, the viewer also falls in love with them, and thats why we route for them.
I don't get when people say "Avatar took a well-known story and never expanded on it, just replaced humans with blue monkey people". Creating an entire Goddess that can ACTUALLY be measured by scientific instruments that aids in her validity, creating an entire language that you can learn to speak and be 100% fluent in like Klingon and Elvish, every single flora and fauna that is named and serves a purpose, multiple clans with their own traditions that we're getting to see in the sequels, the Na'vi being able to quite literally upload their memories into their Goddess like a computer so they can share information with EVERY clan across THE ENTIRE MOON, and a guy willing to have his soul RIPPED out of his body and placed in another to be with his soulmate for the rest of his life, ISN'T EXPANDING ON ANYTHING? REALLY?
I wouldn’t call Jake and Neytiris relationship simple so much as incredibly innocent
It's so refreshing to hear someone make the disclaimer they don't love something before spending 45 minutes defending it. 🙂You are based, sir, and this is extremely well done!
That rant at the 42:00 mark is literally the climax of this essay. Absolutely masterful work, this, THIS is your magnum opus.
“legitimizes the metaphysical in a way that is unusual for a western blockbuster” my entire foundation for my adoration of this film
Worked in an electronics store a few years back, specifically in the TV section. One of the displays played Avatar, all the way through, directors cut and everything. Every Shift. Honestly came to appreciate that it's actually quite a fun film and respect it in my own way. It also became a very effective way of measuring my shifts. Like oh yeah my shift is only 2 and a half avatar viewings.
I have almost no notes on this excellent video other than this: Neytiri falling for Jake makes all the sense. That’s just basic psychology. She got to share her culture with him, make him appreciate it, be there with him every step of the way in a spiritual awakening, connect with him on a deep personal level, that MEANS something, she is deeply invested in him as a person, making him part of their in-group and his deep-seated love and appreciation for the way of life she’s teaching her makes her feel appreciated, validated and satisfied that she could do such a thing for someone. Is he hot? Yeah. That too. Now that the basic pscyhology of it. Character-wise? Her sister was murdered by these dirty fcking aliens, they bulldoze her lands, she hates them, she wanted to kill him ON SIGHT just for being a little monkey man. What becomes of him because of her may as well be leeching a poison from her soul. And then what? She falls head over heels before she even knew he’d done the same. That’s a mindset change… from on sight skewering him with an arrow to turning someone else into shish kebab because that’s her boo, goddamn it! Narratively satisfactory, procedurally satisfactory. It’s great. Like the man said, romance isn’t a 3-dimensional character arc, sometimes it’s a fucking glint in the milkman’s eye.
I get why people think that Neytiri and Jake's love story is shallow on a surface level, but think about this for a second: if an attractive stranger came to your town and you showed them the ins and outs of your life, would you not form a bond? If they stared in awe at every little thing you did and learned to live just like you just because they wanted to, would you not grow a fondness for them? On the flip side, if you met an attractive stranger who showed you how the world works, was always honest with you, and stated that their philosophy was "we're all connected and we love each other for it," would you not fall in love? Come on, that would be so many people's dream come true.
I always saw Neytiri’s “strong heart” line as her way of explaining her interpretation of the will of Eywa to Jake. Rather than saying this and actually feeling it, I see her perspective as more akin to “it must be this way because of the sign I’ve just received.” Also, this video was a masterpiece and an absolute pleasure to watch from start to finish
Genuinely HOW do you have SIXTEEN subscribers????? Literally HOW. This video is beautifully scripted, edited, and voiced over EVERYTHING. HOW. YOU DESERVE WAY MORE. I mistook this channel for someone with subs in the six digits at least! And dont get me started on the whole point of the video. I agree. 1000% you summed up my thoughts perfectly. I wish you the best. Keep up the great work, I hope your channel gets more recognition soon!
Naytiri's love is not shallow. One of the few romances that actually feels nice and cozy and not cringe. It feels romantic in a way that is not cheesy or focused on the drama of it movies force that stuff so often its boring or annoying most times. I'd say the right word is natural.
You have made me realize that most of the arguments against Avatar are post-hoc. I think that some people simply were not moved by the themes and spiritual aspects of the story and couldn't explain why so they came up with a slew of justifications for not liking it. I loved Avatar and I will die on that hill with you.
Fucking THANK YOU. I feel like I should also add that, as an indigenous/Native American person myself watching Avatar in theaters, I didn't sit there thinking, "Oh, great, another white savior story." I thought, "How beautiful to see the gods and creatures of the land all working together in sacred harmony to save their way of life." I know this sounds hokey, but I imagined what it might have been like if, somehow, all the wolves and lions and bears and buffalo and eagles all joined our fight against our own oppressors all those centuries ago. It was amazing to see something like this on the big screen, from a big blockbuster Western Hollywood film.
“Fuck I just wrote Avatar!” 😂 I love the breakdown for your story creation through essential characters, I’ve honestly learned so much and I absolutely wasn’t expecting to haha. +1 subscriber lol.
