I am starting an online business because I want to show my kids that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. My 5-to-10-year vision is to have consistency, so I am able to leave my 9 to 5. Truly inspiring. I'm middle-aged and an empty nester mom. I want to enjoy my old age by creating and making batik clothing etc. and I love being an entrepreneur. So I'm selling online and in person/shop and in addition, it feels good to have extra income.

I started on Etsy because I didn't have a following on social media and I knew that starting on a platform like Shopify would mean 100% I have to drive traffic and I would just eat up monthly costs unfortunately (I did try out shopify briefly too). So I also read the story branding book as well as many other entrepreneur books, I know my WHY and goals but the struggle I'm having is coming up with product ideas. I feel like we are surrounded by so many people with great ideas and I'm feeling stuck. Like I know the message I want to share with the world, I know I can be creative but I just don't really know how to "start" on the creative side. I already know how to run a business, I actually have plenty of product supplies I've tested in the past (making hoodies with vinyl, sublimation, totes, currently making stickers but even that is spotty). I think my biggest overall struggle is trying to build an audience/following on social media. Any advice?

The reason I want to start a business is cause I want my creativity to flourish, I also feel as if I haven’t gotten to use my creativity lately and forgotten my abilities. I also really want to own a business cause I think it would be a really great learning from my mistakes because of the many ups and downs. And how to make decisions which is something I struggle with daily cause I’m always worried I’m making the wrong decisions. That’s all!.

Kudos also goes to the artist who makes your designs. Theyre all pretty and cute, that makes your items saleable. Others who have the same business as your dont quite make it because of the designs.

One day I will be starting my Tote bag business. For now I'm making them and selling them locally at different venues. Just to add a little more helpful information----- obtaining trademark protection, copyright protection or patent protection is important. It's important to protect your original ideas/designs/products, etc. For example, a trademark protects your right to use a design that identifies your business's goods and services and name. Not many people cover this topic in starting a business. It is very important to do your research thoroughly before creating a business. From creating a business plan that includes budgeting the cost of start-up and the cost of the supplies you will be using for your business and marketing costs, to creating a website, to tax information and forms and fees, to what type of business you are starting such as an LLC, to filing paperwork for your business name to make sure no one has that name already, etc.
